Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions are they used for?
Theoretically acupuncture and herbal medicine can be used for almost any medical condition. They are most commonly used for the following:

  • pain
  • arthritis
  • hip dysplasia
  • neurologic conditions
  • intervertebral disk disease
  • allergies

Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture is performed using sterile filament type needles which are smaller in diameter than a straight pin. Pets are aware of the needles being inserted, but they quickly relax once the needles are in place.

Very rarely does a pet show any heightened sensitivity and most appear to really enjoy the treatment.

How often are the treatments performed?
The initial series of treatments is usually once or twice weekly for 3-4 weeks. How your pet responds to treatment as well as type condition being treated will determine the frequency and overall length of treatment.

Acupuncture needlesAcupuncture is defined as the insertion of needles into various points on the body. According to Chinese medical philosophy, acupuncture is believed to balance the body's energy thereby assisting the body in healing itself.

In Western (conventional) terms, acupuncture results in a variety of neurophysiological responses such as the release of certain hormones, stimulation of nerves, improvement of blood circulation and pain control.

Medicinal Chinese herbs have been used for centuries to treat many types of diseases and disorders. They are often prescribed as a combination of herbs called a formula. As with acupuncture, herbal medicine attempts to correct the imbalances in the body rather than just treating a symptom.

Success Stories

"I have a 13 year old shepherd mix named Remy. She was diagnosed with hip dysplasia when she was four and she had her left hip replaced at age five. As she has gotten older her other hip and upper body have caused her much pain and discomfort. She started acupuncture 8 months ago to help ease the pain and give her more mobility. It is miraculous what the acupuncture has done. It is an amazing, relaxing, and enjoyable procedure for her. She realizes that the acupuncture is going to afford her more mobility and less pain and it truly has."
