Puppy/kitten visits
A thorough examination of your new puppy or kitten is necessary to
detect any possible congenital defects or early signs of disease. A
series of immunizations is administered to prevent potentially fatal
infectious diseases.
Internal and external parasite examinations are performed to detect
and treat parasite infestations. Prophylactic deworming of all puppies
and kittens is performed as recommended by the Centers for Disease
Control in order to prevent potential zoonotic transmission of parasitic
infections. Advice is given regarding care of your new pet including
feeding, exercise and training.
Annual wellness visits
An
annual wellness exam is the most important service you can have done for
your pet. One year for your pet is equivalent to approximately seven
human years.
In addition to a thorough exam, your pet will receive necessary
booster immunizations to maintain good immunity to infectious diseases.
Most of the core vaccines are administered every three years, however a
few still require annual boosters.
Laboratory tests for internal parasites, such as intestinal parasites
and heartworms, are performed annually. We also strongly advise an
annual evaluation of blood counts, organ function screening, and a
urinalysis. Other tests such as radiographs, ultrasound, or an EKG may
be indicated.
Parasite prevention
Many effective new products are available for the prevention and
control of internal parasites, such as heartworms and intestinal worms,
and external parasites like fleas, ticks, and ear mites. Most are
administered once a month.

In-house laboratory
We can perform complete blood counts, blood chemistries (both
individual tests and profiles), urinalysis, cytology, fluid analysis,
serologic tests (e.g. occult heartworm, feline leukemia virus, parvo),
and routine parasite exams in-house. This means the results are
available to us immediately which can be very important with a severely
ill patient. We also use outside laboratory services extensively for
non-emergency laboratory tests.
Diagnostic imaging
Radiographic procedures are routinely done at Southwind Animal
Hospital including plain films, contrast procedures such as myelograms,
and dental x-rays. Our new digital x-ray system allows improved imaging
as well as the ability send digital copies of the images electronically
or burned onto a CD-ROM.
We also offer in-house ultrasound capabilities. The addition of a
digital GE ultrasound unit allows us to visualize organs in the abdomen
as well as the heart. A coupled telemedicine system is used to transmit
the ultrasound images and/or radiographs to a panel of specialists for
interpretation.
Endoscopy
A flexible video endoscope is used in our practice to examine the
throat, esophagus, stomach, upper small intestine, colon, and bronchial
tree. Using this instrument we are also able to biopsy these organs, or
remove foreign objects without having to do an invasive surgical
procedure.
Video Otoscope
Ear diseases are quite common in dogs and cats. With our video
otoscope system from MedRx we are able to better examine the ear canal
and ear drum, capture images of the ear, and even perform additional
surgical procedures such as myringotomy (to treat middle ear
infections.)

Modern surgery suite
By using inhalation anesthesia, continuous electronic patient monitoring,
sterile surgical technique, and up-to-date procedures, we are able to offer
safe and effective surgery for your pet. We routinely perform elective
procedures, such as spays and neuters, as well as non-elective procedures
including orthopedic, soft tissue and neurosurgical cases.
We have recently acquired a state-of-the-art electronic monitor from
VetSpecs that allows us to continually monitor blood pressure, EKG, heart
rate, respiratory rate, CO2, pulse oximetry, body temperature and aortic
blood flow throughout any procedure requiring general anesthesia.

Our dentistry department at Southwind Animal
Hospital provides comprehensive oral care for your pet. Dental care
is a very important aspect of total health care for your pet. There
is a statistical correlation in bad oral care and the decreased life
span of dogs and cats. Also, the quality of a pet’s life is also
diminished with bad oral disease.
